Today's outing took us back to good ol' Melbourne. Everytime I spend time in the city, I always find myself thinking that I'd never want to live anywhere else. I just love the mix of historical and modern architechture, the colourful street art, the beautifully maintained gardens, and the ever-changing laneways and eccentric eateries. Add the fact that there is always something to do in Melbourne (events, concerts, markets, exhibits), and there's no need to wonder why Melbourne is one of the most liveable cities in the world.
Today we ventured to check out some of Melbourne's hidden sweet treats, as listed in last week's copy of the The Age. This article brought us to a charming little cafe in Carlton North called Sweet Source, which is speculated to have some of the best cupcakes in Melbourne. I agree with the speculation. These cupcakes are in a league of their own. The cupcakes were exactly as The Age had described them: old-fashioned in apppearance, with a high icing-to-cake ratio. Most people find too much icing overwhelming, but the generous amount of not-so-heavy icing worked well for this delicious treat. My partner described it like this: "I couldn't tell where the icing stopped and the cake started". The cake itself amazingly moist, which is something most cupcake places struggle to get right.
The cafe doesn't just have delicious cupcakes. They have a selection of unique pastries, savouries and other sweets available. They also make a beautiful cup of coffee.
